Beavers

The Beavers maintain the church building.

Most of the men have expertise in different areas of construction and their volunteer work has been highly valued through the years as there has always been plenty of work. Maintenance costs could add up to tens of thousands of dollars if help had to be hired from outside.

The Beavers meet regularly at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, enjoying coffee and pulla while discussing their work plans.

New members are encouraged to come out and see how you can help your church!

History of the Beavers

"Agricola, ankkuri aallokossa" - a book compiled by the late Veikko Saarela - tells about their first big undertaking in 1973, when the Beavers decided give a helping hand to an elderly couple in Parry Sound. Mr. & Mrs. Kallio had lost their home in a devastating fire. Our Social Committee raised funds for the building materials and after careful plans this group of men built them a new house in one weekend.

The word of the Beavers expertise spread and there were a lot of requests for their work. Quite a few houses and cottages were constructed during the following years, and the income from their work was donated to our congregation.

In 1975 the Beavers finished the gallery at the back of our church sanctuary. The finishing touches inside the new wing were also done by the Beavers.

Their comfortable, happy demeanour shows that they enjoy their work. Rev. Suokonautio used to comment: "The work that the Beavers do is their Creed".

May God grant health to our Beavers so they will be able to continue in their own helpful line of work.
